Long Car Journeys with a Toddler: 10 Ideas That Actually Help

Long Car Journeys with a Toddler: 10 Ideas That Actually Help

A three-hour drive can feel like thirty with a bored toddler in the back seat. The good news is that a little planning goes a long way. None of these ideas are magic, but together they make long car journeys far more manageable.

1. Plan the drive around naps

If your child still naps, set off just before nap time so the first stretch passes while they sleep. Early starts can work in the same way.

2. Stop more than you think you need to

Plan a break every hour and a half to two hours. Motorway services, a park or a supermarket car park all give little legs a chance to run. Build the stops into your arrival time so they do not feel like delays.

3. Pack an activity bag they have not seen before

New things hold attention for longer. Save a few activities just for the car, and hand them out one at a time rather than all at once.

  • A felt quiet book with things to fasten, lace and match.
  • A magnetic puzzle book, where the pieces stay on the page instead of in the footwell. Keep magnetic pieces away from babies and count them back in afterwards.
  • A sticker busy book for matching and counting.

4. Give them a surface

Crayons, snacks and toys slide off laps. A car seat travel tray gives them a flat, wipe-clean space with a pocket for bits and pieces. Check your car seat manufacturer's guidance first, and clear the tray for motorway driving: anything rigid in front of a child can cause injury in a sudden stop.

5. Snacks that are not sticky

Pack snacks in small portions and pick things that do not crumble or melt: rice cakes, cheese cubes, fruit pouches, breadsticks. Always stop the car if your child needs help with food, and avoid choking hazards such as whole grapes.

6. Bring the toilet with you

If you are potty training, the nearest services are always further away than you hope. A folding travel potty with sealed bags means you can stop anywhere safe and deal with it in a couple of minutes.

7. Warm feeds on the go

For babies who prefer a warm bottle, a rechargeable bottle warmer means you are not hunting for a kettle at every stop. Always check the milk temperature yourself before feeding.

8. Play car games

I spy with colours instead of letters, counting red cars, spotting cows or tractors, and singing along to a favourite playlist all cost nothing and work surprisingly well.

9. Audiobooks and music

Stories and songs are a good middle ground between toys and screens. Download them before you leave so you are not relying on signal.

10. Keep a “grab bag” in the front

Wipes, a change of clothes, a spare nappy or pants, a bag for rubbish and a small first aid kit, all within reach of the front passenger seat, save stopping to dig through the boot.

Above all, lower the bar. A journey with a few tears and a lot of snacks is still a successful journey.
